New Book Recognizes Climate Impact of 'Forgotten Forests' in Our Backyards

More evidence is out that temperate rainforests like those in western Oregon, Washington and Alaska store more carbon per acre than tropical rainforests, according to a new book by more than 30 leading forest scientists from around the world. "Temperate and Boreal Rainforests of the World: Ecology and Conservation," (Island Press, December 2010) shines the spotlight on these "forgotten forests."

Derek van Eck, president of the Fred M. van Eck Forest Foundation and an invaluable supporter and partner of the Pacific Forest Trust, has passed away at the age of 46. Diagnosed with a neurological disease earlier this year, van Eck was an accomplished investor, philanthropist and partner in our work with the Van Eck forests in Calif. and Ore.
