Topic: Managing temperate forests for climate
Moderator: Laurie A. Wayburn, President, Pacific Forest Trust
Panelists:
- Ashley Conrad-Saydah, Deputy Secretary for Climate Policy, California Environmental Protection Agency
- Hilary Franz, Washington State Commissioner of Public Lands
- Meta Loftsgaarden, Executive Director, Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board
This session will explore how these three Pacific Coast states can best address shared climate challenges and opportunities in a consistent, meaningful way. State leaders in forest climate policy, management and conservation will discuss issues including the role of forests and other lands in state climate policy, principles guiding current and future investment in resilient, carbon rich landscapes, and opportunities for collaboration going forward.
The temperate forests and other lands of Washington, Oregon and California are some of the most productive and diverse on the planet. These forests provide a range of benefits in a changing climate—from sequestering and storing massive amounts of carbon, to providing critical habitat, sustaining rural communities and economies, and enhancing water security. They are powerful, essential tools for both climate mitigation and successful adaptation.
